The Lord Is One
“Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one." Deuteronomy 6:4
Shema is the name Jews have assigned to Deuteronomy 6:4. Shema is the Hebrew word for Hear, the first word in the verse, and it calls undivided attention to the most important doctrine in the Bible--the doctrine of the Oneness of God.
Many scholars have taught that the Shema simply affirms monotheism, the reality that there in only one God, but there is more.
Why would God announce his oneness to a people who are already monotheists?
While it is true that there is only one true God, that is only the surface, and obvious intention of this sacred verse. It's almost too obvious.
In addition to emphasizing monotheism, the Shema also affirms the reality of the Trinity. Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, [though eternally existing as three Persons] is one.
One day all Israel will realize that the monotheistic emphasis of the Shema, also affirms the three Persons of the one true God.
Father, Son, Holy Spirit, I worship you today as one--the one true God.
