Let Me Introduce Myself
"The LORD appeared to him the same night and said, 'I am the God of Abraham.'" Genesis 26:24
When God reveals himself to you, he normally reveals himself by name.
God revealed himself to Abraham multiple times, but this is the first time he reveals himself to Abraham's son, Isaac. And you can learn so much from this moment.
First, God always goes first. He's a self-revealing God and always initiates the relationship. It is utterly impossible for you to start a relationship with God until he first initiates it. If you are a God-seeker, you can be certain that God sought you first.
Second, when God initiates a love relationship, he speaks, and he uses words you can understand.
Third, when he initially speaks he normally identifies himself by name. I am are both appropriate and familiar words--God uses them frequently.
Fourth, God could not have chosen a more appropriate name by which to connect with Isaac than the God of Abraham. His dad's relationship with God was the standard for Isaac.
In your love relationship with God, which of these same principles have you experienced? Think through each insight carefully.
Father God, I love your name. Thank you for initiating a love relationship with me. I praise you for making yourself known to me.
